When the Cat’s Away – A Pantoum

This entry is part 2 of 11 in the series Issue II: Fall 2009

by Syd Lazarus

Cats have it perfected.
They can be and do anything they want in their mind.
Play a piano—sure. Ride a Roomba—sure.
Roar and catch prey—just think it.

They can be and do anything they want in their mind.
They never leave home and territory
Roar and catch prey—just think it.
They are actors taking on roles.

They never leave home or territory,
Yet awake or asleep they are somewhere else.
They are actors taking on roles.
Live in your mind—except if there’s food!

Yet awake or asleep they are somewhere else
In the jungle, in the fields and more.
Live in your mind—except if there’s food!
It’s wonderful being a cat.

In the jungle, in the fields and more,
They never leave home or territory.
It’s wonderful being a cat,
Cats have it perfected.
