I Am From

This entry is part 6 of 10 in the series Issue VIII: Spring 2011

by Deeanna L. Seabrooks

I’m from dark and white chocolates
I’m from happy and sad faces
I’m from small and large places
I’m from the North and the South
Sometimes I have a large mouth
I’m from pork and the beef
I’m from the Germans and the Indians
I’m from large and great homes
I’m from where great men roamed
I’m from where they shout out nigger coldly
I’m from where they tell great stories of negroes boldly
I’m from a great place called America
