We Were Here

By Sakima

You were there, just as I have always seen you. Dark skin, 5’4, slim brother, standing in your shadow.

We were lovers.

I saw you in my dreams years after we were no longer to be together. I guess the universe knew when to throw the trophy out.

But it wasn’t always that way.

I still see your face, so vibrant, like the light of the sun remains for you.

You didn’t say anything to me. Were you mad? You did see me, right? I was there, but I didn’t wave.

I just smiled.

I ran through the darkness to get to the same light as you.

I called your name. I hugged you. I kissed your lips because I remembered that was where our love came from.

But you didn’t respond.

I fell to my knees with sorrow and placed my hands upon my face to cry. Out of control tears falling like lakes and oceans.

Then you kneeled and touched my shoulders.

I looked up with my wet face and softly you spoke.

“I will love you always.”
