Weekly Writing Prompt: Et tu Brute?

Vincenzo Camuccini, "Morte di Cesare", 1798,The Ides of March (March 15) is known as the date that Julius Caesar was assassinated. Legend has it that Caesar was warned that something bad would happen to him on the Ides of March, a warning that he did not take very seriously. The assassination was organized by a group of Senators that called themselves “The Liberators.” This group included one of Caesar’s protegees Brutus. Caesar’s famous last words (immortalized by William Shakespeare) “Et tu Brute?” convey his sense of shock at the betrayal. The motive for Brutus’s betrayal are often contested, was it a power play or did he truly believe that Caesar would ruin the Roman government? Whatever the motivation was there can be no doubt that Brutus’s betrayal is one of the most famous in history.
