Why are so many writers drawn to poker? Why do so many poker players write? And why do many of the world’s best at these two professions live in Brooklyn? Join us at the Brooklyn Historical Society for a panel discussion exploring the intersections between two careers designed to terrify your parents: writing and poker.

Moderated by NYWC founder and Executive Director Aaron Zimmerman, this group will discuss the skill sets, lifestyle, creativity, risk-taking, and constraints that are common to both practices, and you may even leave with a tip or two to liven up your writing and poker game.

Our all-star lineup of poker and writing talent includes Matt Matros (NYWC Workshop Leader, 3x World Series of Poker champion, and author of The Making Of A Poker Player: How An Ivy League Math Geek Learned To Play Championship Poker), Vanessa Selbst (the highest earning female poker player of all time, with over $10.5 million in total winnings), Jennifer Shahade (chess champion, poker player and commentator, author of Chess Bitch and Play Like A Girl) and Choire Sicha (co-founder of The Awl, author of Very Recent History: An Entirely Factual Account of a Year).
