Fundraising Tip #1: Hit delete (a lot)!

Hit delete.

The single best thing you can do for your Write-A-Thon page starts with the delete key (after you sign up, of course)! Log on to Firstgiving, edit your Firstgiving page, and delete all of our default text. Although we recommend that you keep the video we provide, the text on this page is now yours, so make it so!

Take a moment to reflect on why you are participating in the Write-A-Thon. Some people participate because of their relationship to NY Writers Coalition or a connection to our mission. Other people are more interested in dedicating an entire day to writing and connecting with others who share their passion for it. Whatever your reason, focus on that in your letter and on your fundraising page. Your friends and family care about you, so whatever is most important to you about the Write-A-Thon is going to be what they care most about too.

Write a letter.

Sit down and write a letter. This is where we as writers can really shine. Writing about your reasons for attending the Write-A-Thon will actually feel good.  You are giving the people in your life a chance to learn about you as a writer, possibly a side of yourself you don’t often talk about. At the end of your letter, ask your friends for support — and don’t forget to include a link to your fundraising page. Now, take your letter and email it everyone you can think of!

Side Tips

  • It is okay to use the body of your letter for your fundraising page. Copy-n-paste is easy and fun!
  • Consider mailing a printed version of your letter to individuals you think might not be comfortable donating online. Don’t forget the return envelope!
