Created by NY Writers Coalition in 2003, the Writing Aloud Reading Series unites NYWC’s community of writers and activists with some of the nation’s most prominent literary figures. In venues like The Brooklyn Commons, Greenlight Bookstore, and the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, stories that were once silenced are heard by new audiences in New York City.

This year, NYWC’s monthly series calls The Brooklyn Commons home — complete with a new way to write aloud! Here’s how it works:

  1. Get a writing prompt from our special guest writer
  2. Receive a writing prompt from our guest writer.
  3. WRITE.
  4. Hit the mic! if you want to. Feel free to just sit back and listen, too!

This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to write and share in this safe space.

NYWC workshop leaders and participants share prose, poetry, and other writings alongside award-winning poets and writers. Featured performers have included Lemon Andersen, Sinan Antoon, R. Erica Doyle, Eileen Myles, Jon Sands, Tiphanie Yanique, Arisa White, and other established artists.
