Creating ruin in the blink of an eye

Mercedes Lawry

Does one need to be young or drunk?
Daily, the madmen shed tears
and take their dogs for long, aimless walks,
solving nothing.
Structure is a myth,
despite the pleas of the engineers.
You can cajole the weakened to stand back
as if awe would save them.
But the full force winds are in the next county
breaking apart the boards.
Read the lesson plans of dutiful teachers
who can't make heads or tails
from the anger that sometimes
ebbs up from the deep earth,
where the white roses manage to grow.
